about us
Neighbors Mercantile exists to serve our community by providing a welcoming and nostalgic environment. We specialize in celebrating the midwest way of living by providing quality and affordable goods for everyone.

the story
The story of Neighbors began years ago—long before the doors ever opened—when Dennis Martin, the former owner of Martin Hardware, approached us about our potential interest in the building.
From his roasting room across the street, Marcus often looked over at the quiet, empty storefront and imagined it full of life again: lights on, doors open, and rocking chairs out front, ready to welcome folks in.
Fast forward eight years—we reached out to Mayor Phil Jenkins, who encouraged us to go for it. He connected us with the right people, and we were able to purchase the building and begin a full renovation.
The renovation of the old hardware store took nearly three years to complete. The name “Neighbors” was Marcus’s idea after tossing around a long list of possibilities. We wanted something that felt like it belonged to the whole community—and hopefully, you'll feel that when you're shopping here.

it's the little things
One of the big decisions was and continues to be - what to carry in the shop. From little things like bottled sodas and retro candy, to hard to find brands and quality gear...Our goal is to offer something that would draw in both locals and visitors—something for everyone.
We’re still figuring out what fits best, but our guide is simple—we choose unique, quality items we personally love. From trusted apparel and home goods to outdoor gear and toys—if it’s on our shelves, we stand behind it.
We're always on the lookout for products that hold up to the daily rhythm of busy folks in any stage of life. We believe in practical, well-made goods that do their job and last, just like the good old days.

growing together
One question we often hear is, “Why open a store when you’ve always been in foodservice?” The answer is simple—we love our town.
We’d love to see fewer empty buildings in our town. We’re doing what we can to make a difference in our little corner—and we hope you’ll be inspired to do your part, too!
Whether it’s chasing a dream of your own or simply supporting the local bakery, grocer, butcher, or coffee shop—small towns only stay alive when we show up for them. There’s so much heart and history we risk losing if we don’t have these places to do life together.
Thank you for your interest in and support of Neighbors. We're excited to see where this adventure takes us.
